Roll-out and Release Management

PreviousDeliveryNextAssessing Assumptions, Risk, and Issues

Last updated 1 month ago

Roll-out and release management involves planning, coordinating, and executing the process of making a product or feature available to users. This includes determining the release schedule, coordinating with various teams (such as engineering, marketing, and customer support), and managing any risks or issues that may arise during the roll-out. It also involves monitoring the product's performance and gathering user feedback post-release to inform future development efforts.

Example

Imagine you're a Product Manager at a scooter rental company, like Bird. You've been working on a new feature that allows users to reserve a scooter in advance. After months of development and testing, the feature is ready to be released. You begin by planning the roll-out strategy. You decide to do a phased roll-out, starting with a small group of users in a single city to monitor the feature's performance and gather initial user feedback. You coordinate with the engineering team to ensure the feature is ready for release and with the marketing team (or product marketing team) to plan the announcement and promotion of the new feature. You also work with the customer support team to prepare them for any potential user questions or issues related to the new feature.

Once the feature is released, you monitor its performance closely, looking at metrics such as the number of reservations made, user satisfaction, and any reported issues. You gather user feedback and use this information to make any necessary adjustments before rolling out the feature to more users and additional cities.

Pain Points

Roll-out and release management can be complex and challenging. It requires careful planning and coordination with various teams. There can be unforeseen issues or delays during the roll-out, and managing these effectively is crucial to ensure a successful release. Additionally, gathering and analyzing user feedback post-release can be time-consuming but is essential for continuous improvement.

Practical Exercise

Think of a product or feature you've recently seen released. Research the roll out through marketing announcements and any public roadmaps. What do you think went well? What challenges do you think they might have faced? What steps do you think they took to overcome them?
